Ryan Cales is a technology consultant in the Teaching and Scholarship Hub. He supports faculty in utilizing new technologies and integrating digital tools and platforms into their teaching practices. His specialties include digital pedagogy, equitable and accessible teaching practices—particularly in online spaces—course design, and peer mentorship. Ryan’s research interests include rhetorical theory and criticism, community literacy, and composition.
He holds an MA in English (Writing and Rhetoric) and a BA in Philosophy from Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to joining the University of Richmond, Ryan taught general education courses in first- and second-year critical thinking and composition, as well as a humanities course on lying and dishonesty at Virginia Commonwealth University. He served as co-coordinator for the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Program for six years, during which time he also co-taught a seminar on peer leadership. Additionally, Ryan was a longtime volunteer instructor of computer literacy and job preparedness at the Richmond City prisoner reentry program, Opportunity Alliance Reentry.
